Sport and Outdoor Recreation

Sport and outdoor recreation (SOR) courses at Monash can lead to a wide range of exciting and rewarding careers. This unique and specialised area of study is suited to people interested in sport, recreation, health and wellbeing, the outdoor environment, sustainability, leadership and sports and movement studies.

Monash offer a range of courses in sport and outdoor recreation.  You can study primary or secondary education and SOR as a double degree.  You can also combine your SOR degree with a degree in business which can lead to a career in sports marketing, event management, tourism and sports management.

Which Sport and outdoor recreation program is right for me?

The following options will help you choose the right program to suit your background and career aspirations.

  • The Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation is a three year single degree that will provide you with a qualification to work in the sport and outdoor recreation industry.
  • The Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation four year double degree with Primary Education or Secondary Education is a great choice if you want to combine studies to gain a qualification to become a primary school teacher or specialist secondary school teacher. You can also choose another specialist teaching area such as health, science or English - to teach in other areas.
  • The Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation is also offered as a four year double degree and is suited to people who have a have a passion for sport, outdoor recreation and business. This program will give you a range of specialist business skills as well as knowledge and experience in sport and outdoor recreation studies.

Professional placements and fieldwork experience

Sport and outdoor recreation professional placements and fieldwork take place in a range of settings and include wilderness expeditions, sea kayaking, canoeing, and coastal activities such as snorkelling. Fieldwork and professional placements are designed to reinforce and develop the knowledge and understanding you gain in the classroom - so what you learn is put into action.  

You will also have access to the new $12.8M Monash Peninsula Activity and Recreation Centre (MPARC) which is home to a world class fitness centre, sport and fitness testing facilities, basketball, netball and indoor soccer courts.   

If you choose to combine sport and outdoor recreation with a bachelor of education, you will gain practical teaching experience throughout the course. The Faculty’s partnerships and placements office organise each placement.  The professional placement program draws the theoretical components of your studies together with the practical aspects of teaching, giving you first hand teaching experience in the classroom before you graduate.

Career outcomes

  • Following registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching, graduates of the education (primary or secondary) double degree will be qualified to teach in Victorian primary or secondary schools.
  • Graduates of the single degree or double degree in business and commerce can seek employment in sports management, sports training and development, outdoor recreation and leisure, and in a range of positions in business including accounting, marketing and economics.
