English language requirements for Graduate courses

The following English language requirements are effective from July 2008 and apply to both domestic and international students:

Graduate Certificate/Diploma courses with a practicum

Graduate courses offered by the Faculty with a practicum component have the following English Language requirements:

  1. A pass in units 3 & 4 in any VCE English subject or what is judged by the Faculty to be an equivalent (OR completion of all secondary schooling in (an) institution(s) where the language of instruction and assessment was entirely in English) AND at least three years of study in a university or approved tertiary institution where English is (and was at the time) the language of instruction and assessment of the entire institution, and this is verified by the institution. A faculty interview to assess oral proficiency may also be required;
    OR
  2. At least three years of study in a university or approved tertiary institution where English is (and was at the time) the language of instruction and assessment of the entire institution, and this is verified by the institution AND evidence of at least three years of work in communicatively demanding work conducted in English. A faculty interview to assess oral proficiency may also be required;
    OR
  3. IELTS (academic) of at least 7 with a score of at least 7 on speaking and writing and at least 6.5 on reading and listening. A faculty interview to assess oral proficiency may also be required;
    OR
  4. Internet-based TOEFL of 100 with at least 25 on writing and speaking scores and at least 22 on reading and listening. A faculty interview to assess oral proficiency may also be required.

Note: All test scores must be no more than 2 years old at the time of application [or accompanied by evidence of subsequent substantial study in a tertiary institution where courses are taught and assessed in English].

Courses to which these requirements apply:

  • Graduate Diploma of Education (Early Childhood)
  • Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary)
  • Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary)
  • Graduate Certificate of Education (Professional Development Studies) [IF a practicum unit is taken]
  • Graduate Diploma of Education (Professional Development Studies) [IF a practicum unit is taken]
  • Single unit enrolments in EDF4701, 4702 &/or any other practicum unit

Graduate Certificate/Diploma courses without a practicum

Graduate courses offered by the Faculty without a practicum component have the following minimum English Language requirements:

  1. At least two years of study (preferably in the last five years) in a university or approved tertiary institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment of the entire institution, and this is verified by the institution;
    OR
  2. IELTS (academic) of at least 6.5 with at least 6.5 on reading and listening and at least 6.0 on writing and speaking ;
    OR
  3. Paper-based TOEFL score of at least 580 with a TWE of at least 4.5, or an internet-based score of at least 90 with at least 22 on writing and speaking and 20 on listening and reading. [Note: a computer-based TOEFL score of at least 237 with an Essay Rating (ER) of at least 4.5 will be accepted for entry in 2008, but it is no longer valid from 2009 onwards.],  
    OR
  4. Successful completion of the Monash University English Language Bridging Program (MUELBP) or an equivalent program, at the appropriate level. See guidelines for entry into MUELBP.

Note: All test scores must be no more than 2 years old at the time of application [or accompanied by evidence of subsequent substantial study in a tertiary institution where courses are taught and assessed in English].

Courses to which these requirements apply:

  • Graduate Certificate of Education (Professional Development Studies) when no practicum will be studied
  • Graduate Certificate in Counselling
  • Graduate Certificate in Organisational Development
  • Graduate Diploma of Education (Professional Development Studies) when no practicum will be studies
