Choosing a notebook

Staff who choose notebooks will also be supplied with a keyboard, mouse and monitor stand and/or 22 " widescreen LCD monitor (the monitors currently being used).

There are many benefits in choosing a notebook as your primary computer. However, there are issues which you should be aware of before you make the choice.

OHS issues

The use of a notebook can give rise to OHS issues such as neck and shoulder pain, hand cramps and heat related injuries. Also, the extra baggage from carrying or transporting a notebook can be an issue.

Support issues

Notebooks are more prone to theft so will need to be locked with a kensington lock when in the office. The ICTE committee made the decision that, if stolen, the replacement would be a desktop computer.

Warranty issues

When there are technical problems or damage the notebooks will need to be sent offsite for repair. The notebook could then potentially be unavailable for up to 2 weeks.

In the event of a staff member's notebook being unavailable due to repairs, a desktop solution will be arranged. This may require using a computer in another office.
