PROFESSIONAL COUNSELLORS’ UNDERSTANDING AND PRACTICE OF MULTICULTURAL
COUNSELLING IN MALAYSIA: A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS
Presenter: Rafidah Aga Mohd Jaladin
Time: 11.00am-11.30am

ABSTRACT
Counselling, like all behaviours, takes place in a cultural context.
Therefore, understanding of culture and context is very important to
successfully practice counselling with diverse clients, especially in
multicultural settings. This is the primary focus in multicultural
counselling as a field of study because understanding of clients’
cultural background can contribute towards developing multiculturally
competent practices in specific cultural contexts. This study aimed at
exploring the understanding and practice of multicultural counselling in
the specific cultural context of Malaysia. It adopted a mixed-method
approach with the use of both surveys (mailed or online) and
semi-structured interviews as the main data collection methods. The
Multicultural Counselling Survey: Malaysian Version (MCS-Mal) was
developed based firmly from previous literature. About 1500 survey
packages were sent to potential participants among the registered
practising counsellors in Malaysia. This seminar (1) discusses the
challenges when conducting surveys in the socio-political context
of Malaysia; and (2) presents some preliminary findings from the
surveys. Some suggestions for developing better strategies for data
collection in Malaysia, or any developing countries, are also discussed.

TECHNOLOGY USE IN ESL: AN INVESTIGATION OF STUDENTS' EXPERIENCES AND THE IMPLICATIONS FOR L2 EDUCATION

Presenter: Katrina Tour
Time: 11.30am-12noon

ABSTRACT
The 21st century is characterised by the rapid development ICT which
have had a significant impact on all aspects of the society. In
Australia, a wide range of technologies have been integrated into
everyday life and education. However, people of non-English speaking
background may experience many challenges because they are using
technology in a new sociocultural environment and in a second language.
Drawing on a research study of four students from Thailand, China, Saudi
Arabia and France, which is informed by a sociocultural perspective,
this presentation discusses the students’ difficulties with using
technology in English as a second language (ESL). The discussion focuses
on the need for ESL educators to rethink the use of ICT in a second
language classroom.
