Course Length:
Day classes are six hours per day over eight days. Evening classes are two three hour sessions per week over eight weeks. The courses held at the Clayton Campus and Brunswick shall be eight hours per day over six days.
Recognition:
The Certificate is recognised by the Faculty of Education to the value of six credit points at undergraduate level.
Prerequisites:
No prerequisites.
Assessment:
Journal
Class participation/attendance (80% attendance must be maintained)
2 written assignments
About the course
The course aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to support students who have additional learning needs to access the curriculum.
Topics covered include:
- Historical and current perspectives on educating students with additional learning needs
- The roles, responsibilities and work conditions of an Integration Aide / Teacher Aide and an understanding of the process of seeking and applying for employment in schools;
- Understanding individual learning styles
- Working as part of a team with students, families and staff members
- Understanding and supporting the learning needs of students with:
- Intellectual Disabilities
- Learning Disabilities
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Physical Disabilities
- Communication Difficulties
- Sensory Impairment
- Challenging Behaviours
- Teaching and Learning
- Engaging students in learning; Stages of Learning
- Curriculum and the development of Individual Learning Plans.
