About the course

This course is designed to help participants understand some of the underlying issues that may lead to students exhibiting challenging behaviours in mainstream settings.

It aims to provide a model for managing students' challenging behaviour, along with specific, related strategies designed to support participants in dealing with these behaviours.

Topics covered include:

  • Child and Adolescent Development;
  • Biological, cognitive and psychological changes;
  • Challenges faced by children and adolescents today;
  • Risk and resilience factors;
  • Understanding behavioural problems and mental health issues;
  • What you can do to help and when to refer on.
  • Identifying the motivation for the behaviour;
  • Proactive V reactive teachers;
  • The assertive approach to discipline;
  • Teacher response styles; Links with Restorative Justice;
  • Specific, effective strategies;
  • The discipline plan;
  • Whole school approach;
  • Achieving consistency through school wide practice.
