CROSSLIFE is an ERASMUS Curriculum Development project funded by the European Commission to support joint studies in European higher education.

ERASMUS CD PROJECT:  29560-IC-1-2004-1-FI-ERASMUS-PROGUC-1

Product: Pilot Study Program

The primary product is a research-based study program designed for professionals and researchers wishing to develop as academic experts of cross-cultural collaboration in education and work. It is organised as a 5-step learning pathway that supplements Masters and Doctoral research studies.

Project rationale

The rationale for CROSSLIFE is to revitalise the old idea of ‘academic apprenticeship’ to develop qualitatively new expertise relevant to academic work in global times. Students and tutors work together in cross-cultural learning environments to learn more about globalisation and movements of peoples and ideas in education and work, and also develop research-based expertise and skills in cross-cultural collaborations.

The process of developing and implementing the CROSSLIFE learning pathway involved six universities in a collaborative methodology. The participants were the University of Tampere (Finland), the Institute of Education (London), the University of Malta, the Danish Pedagogical University (DPU, Copenhagen) and Monash University (Melbourne). The project builds on their long-term collaboration through the international VET and Culture research network.

Key findings

The findings of this pilot study reveal positive learning outcomes for students and tutors, but also design constraints. Building on the evidence-base provided by this pilot study, the consortium suggests more sustainable strategies for revitalising academic apprenticeship through work-based learning.
