Conditions of placement
There are 9 key conditions that all pre-service teachers should be aware of and must adhere to with reference to placement allocations:
- Pre-service teachers may be allocated to a placement that requires travel up to 60 minutes by car or 75 minutes by public transport. All pre-service teachers should be prepared to travel this distance to an allocated placement. (NB. Secondary pre-service teachers undertaking a hard to place specialism, should be prepared to travel for a longer time frame)
- Pre-service teachers are NOT permitted to contact schools/centres and organise their own placements unless specifically instructed to do so by the Professional Placements Office
- Pre-service teachers are NOT permitted to refuse a placement organised by the Professional Placements Office unless extenuating circumstances apply; Pre-service teachers are to attend the school/centre to which they have been allocated
- Pre-service teachers will undertake their placements in line with scheduled dates unless a Placement Consideration Application citing legitimate reasons has been lodged and approved
- Pre-service teachers are responsible for being aware of when placements have been scheduled and should make the necessary arrangements to ensure that they are able to undertake placement during these designated times
- Pre-service teachers may be allocated to a placement in the same education sector, i.e. placed in a government school for multiple placements
- Pre-service teachers may be allocated to placements in a variety of cultural settings
- The Professional Placements Office is under no obligation to place students in a “variety” of settings or to meet any particular student requests
- In order to be eligible for placement all students must have applied for a Work With Children Check
If a pre-service teacher is aware that they will not be undertaking a placement for any placement unit in which they are enrolled or they require variations to their placement needs (e.g. make-up days from a previous placement, doing two placement units concurrently, etc.), they should notify the Professional Placements Office immediately so that appropriate arrangements may be put in place.
