Named Monash Apollo, the rocket ship is part of an exercise in emerging curriculum at the centre. The project began by discussing ideas about space, before children quickly latched onto the idea of rocket ships. Staff and 2nd year Monash University early childhood students at the centre posed the question: ‘maybe we could build a rocket ship?’
Children were encouraged to imagine the ways a rocket ship would be constructed, and a note went home to families to explain this exciting new project and asking for materials. Monash Apollo took three days to build, and along with this space vehicle came the necessary equipment such as space backpacks and space helmets. The rocket has launched a whole range of ideas about space and the universe, with staff recording ideas in mind-maps that now adorn the centre’s walls. As well as thinking about planets and rockets, the children didn’t forget the most important consideration: space food!
